Flyball is an exciting and fun way to perform an interactive sport with your dog. Two teams of four dogs race against each other from a start/finish line, over a set of four jumps, to a spring
loaded box where they release and retrieve the tennis
ball and return over the jumps carrying the ball with
them over the start/finish line. The course, one
way, measures 51 feet.
Flyball is a relay race for a team of four dogs
(with two substitutes allowed). The jumps are set
at the height of the smallest dog running in each heat,
between a minimum of 7 inches and a maximum of 14. Each dog must return over the finish line before the next one can enter the course. Ideally they should cross nose to nose on the start/finish line. The winner of the heat is the team whose dogs have completed the course in the fastest time with no faults. Faults are imposed mainly if the dog has an early changeover, fails to complete the course correctly or does not retrieve the ball. A winner is declared from the best of 5 heats.
